The main reason the Mets stayed in first place for over 100 days, was how well their starting pitching performed. One of the reasons the Mets were not able to get back in first place, is the starting pitching did not perform well. Jacob deGrom got hurt, Carlos Carrasco underperformed, Tylor Megill was inconsistent, and the other starting pitchers have a history of being injured. Noah Syndergaard was injured most of the season and only pitched two innings. Acquiring starting pitching depth should be a top priority for the Mets this offseason. It seemed like Noah Syndergaard was going to stay with the Mets after expressing how much he wanted to be a Met. But as always with the Mets, nothing is as it seems.

Noah Syndergaard ended up signing a one-year 21 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. This deal was only three million more than the qualifying offer of 18.4 million that the New York Mets offered Syndergaard. What is concerning about Noah leaving the Mets, is according to multiple reports, he did not tell the Mets he was going to be signing with the Angels due to their better offer. The Mets will get a compensatory draft pick and an extra 18.4 million to spend on other free agents.

The main free agent the Mets should use the Syndergaard money on is Marcus Stroman. He was one of the pitchers that were pitching great when the Mets were in first place. When deGrom got hurt, Stroman was the only consistently productive starting pitcher the Mets had and finished ninth in ERA. Stroman is looking for a big payday and now the Mets have more money to potentially re-sign him. Even if the Mets do keep Marcus, they still need more starting pitching.

Fortunately for the Mets, there are plenty of available free-agent starting pitchers. Max Scherzer is not coming to the Mets, the realistic options to pursue besides Stroman are Kevin Gausman, Carlos Rodon, Robbie Ray. The one concern about these pitchers is 2021 was their first great year. They are going to have high asking prices as well which can make it risky to sign them. If the Mets do keep Stroman, adding Jon Gray or Anthony Descalfini would be nice additions as they are solid pitchers at a lower price.

The Mets need to sign one big starter and at least one or more depth pieces for the rotation. Getting a draft pick is also a big deal for a farm system that is top-heavy and depleted. Maybe Noah Syndergaard is not the same pitcher anymore and the Mets will end up being lucky he did not re-sign. But as we know, the Mets do not normally get lucky.

The Yankees just endured a roller coaster of a season, ending with a loss to the Boston’s Red Sox in the American League Wild Card Game. After starting off the season as basically a .500 team through the all star break, the Yankees rebounded in the second half after some key acquisitions. Cashman and the front office pulled the trigger on Joey Gallo, Anthony Rizzo, Joely Rodrigues, Wandy Peralta, and Clay Holmes. Surprisingly enough, Clay Homes and Wandy Peralta topped that list for production for the Yankees, however it cannot be overlooked the balance that Gallo and Rizzo brought to the lineup.

Heading into the off-season the first choice management had to make was on the manager and the coaching staff. Shortly before bringing back Aaron Boone on a 3 year deal plus a club option for the fourth deal, the Yankees fired coaches Phil Nevin, Marcus Thames, and PJ Pilittere. Since, Reggie Willits has decided to join the coaching staff of Oklahoma.

With some stability at manager and pitching coach, the Yankees must first fill out the rest of the coaching staff, with the new hitting coach as arguably the most important piece. The first move to the coaching staff outside of Boone was bringing in former Mets manager Luis Rojas to be their third base coach. He adds a lot of experience to a young coaching staff. Aaron Boone has done a good job keeping the club together despite all the injuries over the past few years. His relationship with Cashman and the front office can not be overlooked as he looks to bring the Yankees to their first World Series since 2009.

The biggest need for the New York Yankees, as according to Brian Cashman, is Shortstop. Whether that be Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, Marcus Semien, or multiple other candidates, remains to be determined. But it does appear that Gleyber Torres will permanently move back to second base, a position he has thrived at in the big leagues. This will either move DJ Lemahieu to third base or first base depending on the rest of the moves the Yankees make. After getting their white whale short stop this offseason, which seems almost inevitable, there are plenty other areas of need as well.

First base saw very little production in 2021 for the Yankees. Due to injuries with Luke Voit, the position lacked offense. That led to the acquisition of Anthony Rizzo. Reports also surfaced recently of Rizzo wanting to be back with the Yankees. He fits a big area of need for the team, a lefty first baseman with power but more importantly good bat to ball skills to separate their big righty sluggers. If they are able to get Rizzo back at a favorable length to the club, that can help propel this team to some stability and make all the infielders better. The one concern with Rizzo is age, as he will enter his age 33 season and took a slight step backward at the plate last season. However, Matt Olsen of the Oakland A’s appears to be a big name available via trade this offseason. Outside of freeman he might be the best hitter on the market, so it remains to be seen how much he will command in a trade this offseason.

Centerfield was another position last year that saw very little production. However the team does not believe they need to make an improvement from outside at that position because Aaron Hicks looks to be healthy and ready to go for spring training. He will start in CF and will provide balance in the middle of this lineup. The Yankees have and will continue to check in on players like Sterling Marte as they are always looking to be strong up the middle. Catcher is another position that Cashman will surely look at, however Gary Sanchez will most likely be back and the starting catcher for the 2022 season, as there simply aren’t better offensive option on the market. Tucker Barnhardt was amongst players the Yankees should at least do their due diligence towards, however he quickly agreed to a contract elsewhere.

Lastly, we will talk about their offseason moves on the pitching side. The Yankees had the second best team ERA in the AL last season, trailing just the Rays, and that was with an array of injuries. Next season, the rotation projects to be Cole, Severino, Taillon, Montgomery, and German headlining. They also have plenty of young options such as the improved Nestor Cortes Jr, Mike King, Luis Gil, Deivi Garcia, and Clarke Schmidt. If they are able to go out and get another middle of the line starter they will have another very strong rotation in the AL. Starting pitching, for once, is not their biggest area of need. They have done their due diligence on Justin Verlander, who if healthy is the best pitcher on the market despite his age. Their bullpen is also one or two small pieces away from being unstoppable, as it already looks to be amongst the best in the sport. Featuring Chapman, Green, Loisiga, Holmes, Peralta, amongst many other good arms, the bullpen looks to remain a strength. Joely Rodriguez was their first official signing of the offseason.

Overall the Yankees have a very busy offseason coming, especially after comments made by Brian Cashman that their team simply isn’t athletic enough and has too many strikeouts in the lineup. I expect this offseason for them to make many changes to the personnel of the offense to get this team back to where they need to be, in the World Series. This free agent class is excellent and I am very excited to see how the offseason plays out. Watch for a couple trades that Cashman will make that appear to come out of the blue, with names that no one is considering.

This season of the Premier League has been even more turbulent and unpredictable than normal given the usual suspects for a champion. Many of the goals and ambitions set by clubs and the fans have either been reaffirmed or drastically recalculated (most notably my club Manchester United) in order to salvage the season. We are only 11 games in and one-quarter of the managers who started are now out of work. Chelsea has maintained their prominence sitting at the top of the table. Liverpool has regained their form with key players back from injury and Mohamed Salah yet again showcasing his world-class talent. Man-City still has the title in sight despite lacking in the No.9 position. West Ham has surprisingly made a serious attempt at making the top-4. Even a club like Arsenal has surpassed expectations despite such a terrible start, while their neighbor’s Spurs seem to be burning down. What does this mean for the mid-table? And what teams will be without European football next season? With any result, this year has proven the Premier League remains the most unpredictable and exciting league in Europe.

The usual suspects for the top 4 aren't necessarily guaranteed their spots this year and that can be for a couple of reasons. West Ham under David Moyes has been such an entertaining and well-balanced side to watch. Players like Benrahma and Declan Rice continue to raise their stock putting in performances rivaling that of other big names within the league. Of course, credit must go to Moyes for putting his players in positions to succeed; however, with rumors of Rice making a move to a larger club next summer, who knows whether this two-year stint of performances will continue on much longer. For the time being, they are taking full advantage of their squad and since normal top-4 finisher Man. United is in disarray, it's likely they’ve taken on a nothing to lose mentality.

Arsenal has unexpectedly gone on an unbeaten streak of 10 games(in all competitions) and now sit above former title-favorites Man. United with Mikel Arteta finally pulling through on promises he has made to the fans. He now has the squad he wants playing the way he wants and because of that young players like Emile Smith-Rowe, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, and Bukayo Saka are developing into players that can sustain the future of the club. Many doubted Arteta’s abilities starting off the season with a three-game losing streak but many have also argued this is only his second year at the club and has only now been given the tools to be successful. Either way, it's hard to argue given the results and although it will be tight, Arsenal has a genuine case at landing the 4th spot this season. Again, this is really only possible because of Manchester United’s historically poor performance this season (the details of which are enough for another article).

Spurs have sacked Nuno Santo as manager after only being at the club for three months and have since replaced him with United favorite Antonio Conte. Conte is widely considered one of the top managers in the world and his presence at the club may save it from its own dysfunction. His passionate personality will definitely reinvigorate this languishing side and

Finally, bring the spotlight back to players like Heung-min Son and Harry Kane but a 4th-place finish is yet to be determined despite being within the level.

Premier League football this season has produced some exciting scorelines and performances and many teams have had to reflect on their goals for the season. While in my opinion, this is all at the hands of Manchester United(who have yet to sack their manager), when given the opportunity, many clubs have proven to have quality sides deserving of recognition. The usual suspects for the top-6, while for the most part seem unchanged, have a reason to be cautious with their fixtures and we may very well likely see a team return to Champions’ League football next year. Not even a third of the way in the season and the fans are guessing more now than before the season started.
